A romance novel is a work of fiction in which the main foccus of the piece is on a romantic relationship, usually between the female and male leads. Medieval romances are typically set between 938-1485 AD. These romances cover the period of chivalry, of courtly love, and of knights and fair damsels, in or out of distress. These novels are the some of the most popular historical romantic novels and are often nicknamed "bodice-rippers".
Romantic novels have certain features which distinguish them from other genres of writing. In romantic novels, there are interactions of opposite sex leading to dangerous liaisons and entanglements, desire for the beloved, one or more intimate meetings and happy ending for the couple in love. These novels are heart warming and make very pleasant reading. Medieval romance novels are extremely enjoyable. Middle Ages were one of mystery and intrigue, with dark, brooding and handsome men and damsels in distress or girls forced into loveless marriages.
Medieval romantic novels typically deal with dukes or counts or other men connected with them. In those times, conquering new territories meant a lot to the men in power and convenient marriages were one of the ways of enhancing their fiefdoms.
